Managing Scoliosis: Early Detection & Evidence-Based Care in Clive IA
A diagnosis of scoliosis in Clive IA can be scary for a parent to hear and confusing for an adult to navigate. But a curve in the spine does not always mean a future of heavy bracing or spinal fusion surgery.
At Full Circle Chiropractic, we specialize in the early detection and non-invasive management of spinal curvatures. Whether you are a parent concerned about your child’s posture or an adult dealing with shifting spinal mechanics, our Clive team offers a conservative, evidence-based path forward.
What is Scoliosis in Clive IA? (The Clinical Reality)
Scoliosis is not just "poor posture." It is a complex, three-dimensional deformity where the spine rotates and curves sideways.
According to the Scoliosis Research Society, a diagnosis is confirmed when the spinal curvature measures more than 10 degrees (Cobb Angle) on an X-ray.¹
While there are many types, the two most common forms we treat in Clive, Waukee, and West Des Moines are:
1) Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (The "Growth Spurt" Curve)
This occurs most often during the rapid growth phases of puberty (ages 10–15). "Idiopathic" means the specific cause is unknown, but genetics play a major role.
- The Risk: As the child grows taller, the curve can progress rapidly if not monitored.
2) Degenerative (Adult) Scoliosis
This is caused by "wear and tear." As discs degenerate and joints become arthritic, the spine can lose its stability and begin to shift.
- The Risk: This often leads to spinal stenosis (narrowing of the nerve canals) and chronic lower back pain.
Spotting the Signs: The "Adam’s Test"
Scoliosis is often painless in its early stages, which makes screening vital. Parents often notice changes in their child's posture before a pediatrician does.
We utilize the Adam’s Forward Bend Test along with digital X-rays to assess spinal symmetry.
Look for these 4 Key Indicators at home:
- Uneven Shoulders: Does one strap of a backpack always slide off?
- Prominent Blade: Does one shoulder blade stick out more than the other?
- Uneven Hips: Does the waistband of pants sit unevenly?
- The "Rib Hump": When they bend forward to touch their toes, is one side of the rib cage higher than the other?
If you see any of these signs, do not wait. A simple X-ray can confirm or rule out the diagnosis instantly.
The Danger of "Wait and See"
For decades, the standard medical advice was "watch and wait." We believe this approach is flawed.
- In Adolescents: A small curve can rapidly progress during a growth spurt. Waiting until a curve is "bad enough" to brace misses the window of opportunity for conservative care.
- In Adults: Gravity is constant. Untreated scoliosis often leads to a cascade of secondary issues, including Sciatica, spinal stenosis, and diminished lung capacity in severe cases.²
The goal of chiropractic care is not just to treat the pain, but to stabilize the spine.
How We Help: The Chiropractic Approach
Research supports the use of chiropractic care to help manage scoliosis-related pain and improve function.
At Full Circle Chiropractic, our care plan focuses on three pillars:
- Mobility & Function (The Joints) - Scoliosis causes the joints on the "concave" (inside) of the curve to become jammed and immobile. Specific adjustments help restore motion to these locked joints, reducing pain and stiffness.
- Muscular Balance (The Soft Tissue) - Muscles on the outside of the curve are often stretched and weak, while muscles on the inside are short and tight. We use soft tissue therapies and corrective exercises to balance this tension and support the spine.
- Co-Management (The Team Approach) - We believe in integrated care. We monitor your curve closely with digital imaging. If a curve progresses beyond conservative limits (typically >25 degrees), we have a network of trusted orthopedists for bracing referrals while we continue to manage the musculoskeletal pain.
Don't Let the Curve Define You
You can live a full, active life with scoliosis. The key is keeping your spine flexible, strong, and monitored.
